On the return to Deepwater Keep, Lena observes Astontown through the window of her carriage. Upon arriving at Crownhill, the isle that hosts the castle, Lena and her attendants alight. Sending her knights to rest, Lena proceeds to her mother’s chamber, where she finds 'The Grave Witch' Ganna Lyngrave conducting a ritual and praying to foreign gods at Queen Alissa's side. Despite the royal healer's advice that the queen needs to stay warm, Ganna has opened the window, dismissing the healer’s concerns and claiming it to be a 'plague' rather than a simple illness. Despite Lena’s protests, Ganna insists on keeping the window open, explaining that her prayer is for a merciful death from all gods, and claims that the queen will surely die that night. Outraged, Lena drives Ganna from the room and begins to discuss her and her husband with her maids. Ganna’s husband, Ser Arryn Stout, has been dispatched to Old Watch in the Marches to accompany Prince Rhael Ross, the exiled prince, back to the capital. As Lena contemplates her brother's presence before their mother's demise, a crow enters through the window, blood dripping from its wing as it lands on the sill, screaming angrily as it spreads its wings.

Princess Lena Ross prays in the Grand Daias Temple for her ailing mother, Queen Alissa Pansymon, who has been unconscious and feverish for weeks on her deathbed. After her prayers, she returns to Deepwater Keep with her retinue, only to find Ganna Lyngrave, whom she discovers solemnly praying over her mother when she enters her chamber.

Princess Lena Ross, in the presence of High Priest Aharran at the Grand Daias Temple, offers prayers to the gods for her mother, Queen Alissa Pansymon, who lies unconscious and feverish. During the prayer, Lena mistakenly recites some passages from the Holy Teachings of Daias, and High Priest Aharran corrects her. Lena confides that her mother’s condition has not improved, and Aharran reminds her that their only duty is to pray. Afterward, Aharran, citing his old age and fatigue, dismisses Lena.

Outside the Grand Daias Temple, Lena rejoins her ladies-in-waiting and sworn knights, who have been waiting to escort her back to Deepwater Castle. She greets her long-waiting ladies-in-waiting, Anrella Huffle and Sarah, along with her sworn knights, members of the Falcons, Darren Barrow, Ardor Barrow, and Othor Brock. During their journey home, Sarah and Anrella attempt to persuade Lena to spend time at the Bright Eye in the castle’s garden with friends Cassa Hemdall and Lieara Borrand. Lena, distressed by the absence of her other ladies during such trying times, declines.
